Swashbuckling high seas adventure, pirates, mermaids, magic “starstuff”, and covert missions for the Queen comprise the secret recipe for hilarity and adventure when Peter and the Starcatcher plays at the BlueShore Financial Centre at Capilano University between November 16 and 25. It’s an epic origin story about one of the most cherished characters of all time! The production is presented by the Exit 22 Theatre Company*.
This wildly adventurous prequel to Peter Pan, based on the 2004 novel by humorist Dave Barry and suspense writer Ridley Pearson and adapted for the stage by Rick Elice (Jersey Boys – Addams Family), won 5 Tony Awards.
The scene: It’s 1885, Queen Victoria reigns, and we follow a perilous sea voyage from London to unknown enchanted shores. We first meet Peter Pan as “Boy” (Nicco Del Rio), a nameless orphan who does not want to grow up, aboard the ship the Neverland. Also on board is the precocious Molly Aster (Rachel Heath), an apprentice starcatcher on a secret mission for the queen to protect a precious cargo. With the help of Molly’s father, Lord Aster (Ethan Shankaruk), orphans Ted (Yukon de Leeuw) and Prentiss (Madison Long) and a cast of colourful characters (full list below); Molly and Peter fight to keep the treasure safe while pursued by the infamous pirate Black Stache (Braeden Saucy). It’s a rollicking tale of friendship, daring and the search for the leader in us all – an adventure for the young, the young-at-heart — and those determined never to grow up.
Director Gillian Barber helms this story of how Peter became Pan. Gillian teaches Acting, Musical Theatre and has directed most of the musicals in the Main Stage season at the BlueShore.
